In the Discover stage, we researched the young visitors and family visitors, and we made many key findings. Next, we move on to the define phase, the aim of this design phase is to define some clear design directions. In the Define stage, we should analyse the key findings from the previous stage and then identify the real user needs. Yitong Han’s target users are young travellers and my target users are younger and elderly people in intergenerational travel. Therefore, we need to solve different problems. This blog describes what I did in the define stage and my final design direction.

Point of view

Based on the previous research, my point of view is that

1. Under the COVID-19 epidemic, tourists sometimes meet unexpected situations when they travel, but they often do not know how to solve the problem, especially when they are in an unfamiliar city. At this time, they need some help urgently because the feeling of helplessness can cause them to have negative emotions.

2. Middle-aged and older users want to plan travel with their children or grandchildren, because they want to have more opportunities to communicate with younger people.

3. The two generations have many different habits when travelling and they both need to make themselves well rested during the travel because the quality of rest affects their mood.

How Might We

The POV (point of view ) helped me to identify the design challenges. The next step was to break down the design challenge into some “How might we” questions, which were the most important to be solved in this project.

1. How might we make tourists know important information while travelling? For example, the Covid-19 information.

2. How might we make tourists more comfortable with emergencies and difficulties?

3. How can we involve middle-aged and older users in the pre-trip planning phase?

4. How might we make it possible for two generations to communicate more?

5. How might we give every traveller a quality break during their trip?

Reflection

In my opinion, the HWM analysis method can change our inherent thinking logic, prevent ourselves from being trapped in one direction and open up our thinking dimension. This method allows us to analyse the same problem from multiple directions.

Yitong Han and I also have different design goals because our design directions and target users are different. In the following work, we will discuss our design goals and then work together to complete a prototype to achieve our design goals.
